British Standard 1722 Series Of Fencing

BS 1722 Part 1: Specification for ChainLlink Fences. (2006)
BS 1722 Part 1 covers chain link fencing ranging from domestic fencing to industrial security and railway safety, with heights from 900 to 2150 mms.  The posts may be concrete, timber or steel and the chain link light, medium or heavy gauge with a galvanised or plastic coated finish.  The top of the fences may be extended, straight or cranked, to receive three rows of barbed wire.
The British Standard also covers single and double leaf gates with chain link infill.

Chain link fences have been a very popular and economic boundary demarcation fence for may years.

BS 1722 Part 2: Specification for strained wire and wire mesh netting fences. (2006)
Note: From 2000 this British Standard incorporates Part 3
BS 1722 Part 2 covers strained wire fences (mild steel or high tensile wire), stock netting fences and protection fences against deer and rabbits; the posts may be steel, concrete or timber.

Strained wire or mesh fences are generally used for farm, park or light domestic partition fencing.

BS 1722 Part 4: Specification for Cleft Chestnut Pale Fences. (1991)
BS 1722 Part 4 covers Cleft Chestnut Pale Fencing on timber or concrete posts for heights of 900 mm to 1800 mm.

Cleft Chestnut Pale Fences have a pleasing aesthetic look and are found in many situations whether rural or urban, domestic or commercial.  The fence is often used for road and park boundaries and is also an excellent temporary fence system that may be erected and relocated many times.

BS 1722 Part 5: Specification for Close Board and Wooden Palisade Fences. (2006)
BS 1722 Part 5 covers Close Board and Wooden Palisade Fence heights from 1050 mm to 1800 mm using both timber and concrete posts.

Close Board Fences are strong in construction and form excellent solid barriers for domestic, amenity and commercial applications.

The wooden palisade fences are of equal strength and used in applications where a solid barrier is not appropriate or wind requires to be filtered.

BS 1722 Part 7: Specification for Wooden Post and Rail. (2006)
BS 1722 Part 7 covers Wooden Post and Rail fences from heights 1100 mm to 1300 mm using sawn, cleft and round timber, with rails being either nailed or mortised into the posts.

This is a very popular boundary or demarcation fence with many uses from stock    fences to domestic / park fences.  Stock netting, chain link, weld mesh or cleft chestnut can be added to increase the versatility of the fence, though these items are outside of the scope of BS 1722 Part 5.

BS 1722 Part 8: Specification for Mild Steel (low carbon steel) Continuous Bar Fences and Hurdles. (2006)
BS 1722 Part 8 covers Continuous Bar Fences, Hurdles and Gates 1000 – 1500 in height with flat or round horizontal rails.

The fences were very popular in the past for animal containment and park fences.  They still provide an attractive and discrete strong hardwearing and low maintenance boundary fence.

BS 1722 Part 9: Specification for Mild Steel (low carbon steel) Fences with round or square verticals and flat horizontals. (2006)
BS 1722 Part 9 covers Vertical Bar Fencing with square or round vertical bars, flat horizontal rails and RSJ or RHS posts.  The vertical bars may be bow top, pointed, domed, blunt top or have ornamental heads.

Vertical Bar Fences are very popular and attractive boundary fences, with good security characteristics, hard wearing and low maintenance. They are found in many installations including parks, schools, hospitals, factories and retail parks.

BS 1722 Part 10: Specification for Anti-Intruder Fences in Chain Link and Welded Mesh. (2006)
BS 1722 Part 10 covers Chain Link and Welded Mesh Fences 2400 mm high with extensions for barbed wire above and the bottom either buried 300 mm, hair pinned stapled to hard standing or placed in
a concrete sill.  The posts may be concrete or steel RSA, RHS, or CHS.
It should be noted that manual handling risk assessments cannot be written for anti-intruder concrete posts and the Betta Group will only use these if the fence lines are accessible to lifting machinery.

Single and double leaf gates with the same security criteria, are also specified in this standard.

Anti-Intruder fences are used where an enhanced level of security is required over the fences conforming to BS 1722 Part 1.  Typical sites using this level of security are airfields, industrial and commercial estates, military and fuel installations.

BS 1722 Part 11:  Specification for Prefabricated Wood Panel Fences. (2006)
BS 1722 Part 11 covers horizontal and vertically boarded prefabricated timber panels, up to 2000 mm high, fixed to concrete, slotted concrete or timber posts with the option of timber or concrete gravel boards.

Prefabricated timber panels manufactured to this British Standard are a good economic domestic fence or screen.  The panels should not be used in areas of high wind exposure or where there will be animal or personnel loading.

BS 1722 Part 12: Specification for Steel Palisade Fences. (2006)
BS 1722 Part 12 covers Steel Palisade Fences and Gates for general purpose use and enhanced security levels.

Steel Palisade Fencing and Gates are a popular choice when requiring tough hardwearing low maintenance boundary protection with good security characteristics.

BS 1722 Part 13: Specification for Steel Palisade Fences. (Obsolescent)
BS 1722 Part 13 covers Chain Link Fencing surrounds to tennis courts with a minimum height of 2750 mm using steel RSA and RHS posts.

BS 1722 Part 14: Specification for Open Mesh Steel Panel. (2006)
BS 1722 Part 14 covers Category 1 – general purpose fences up to 2400 mm high; Category 2 – security fences from 2400 mm high; Category 3 – high security fences from 3000 mm high; Category 4 – extra high security fences from 3000 mm high.

The fences range from general Open Mesh Steel Panel system for deterring the casual intruder to the extra high security system, which does not permit finger holds.
